Protecting Pets With Vaccines

Vaccinating your dog or cat is one of the most important steps you can take to keep them healthy. Some of the diseases we vaccinate against can be very serious—even deadly—so it’s much better to prevent them in the first place. Diseases like rabies or leptospirosis can also spread to people, which means vaccinating your pet helps protect your whole household, not just your furry family members.

Safe and Smart Disease Prevention

At Fox Creek Veterinary Hospital in Kirkwood, MO, we follow the vaccine guidelines recommended by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). This means your pet gets trusted, high-quality care. Vaccines are safe for most pets and work well to prevent many serious diseases. In almost every case, the protection vaccines provide far outweighs any small risk.

If your pet has had a reaction to vaccines in the past, we’ll work with you to create a custom vaccine plan. We want to keep your pet safe and healthy while avoiding unwanted side effects. We also offer vaccine titer testing when needed, which can show whether your pet is still protected and may not need a booster yet.

General Canine Vaccines Include:

  • Rabies: A deadly virus that affects the brain and nerves. It can be passed to people, which makes this vaccine important for both pet and human safety.
  • Parvovirus: A fast-spreading virus that causes severe vomiting and diarrhea. It’s especially dangerous for puppies.
  • Distemper: A serious infection that harms the lungs, stomach, and brain. It can lead to long-term issues or even death.
  • Adenovirus (Canine Hepatitis): A virus that affects the liver and can cause fever, pain, and long-lasting health problems.
  • Leptospirosis: A bacteria found in water and soil that can harm the kidneys and liver—and it can spread to humans.

Risk-based (Conditional) Canine Vaccines Include:

  • Kennel Cough: A respiratory illness caused by Bordetella and Parainfluenza. It spreads easily in places like boarding or grooming centers.
  • Canine Influenza: We offer protection against both H3N8 and H3N2 flu strains to help prevent this contagious illness.
  • Lyme Disease: A disease passed by ticks that can cause joint pain, tiredness, fever, and even kidney damage.

Core Feline Vaccines Include:

  • Rabies: A deadly disease of the nervous system that also threatens human health. In many areas, it’s required by law for all cats.
  • Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1): A common virus that causes sneezing, eye problems, and flare-ups—especially when cats are stressed.
  • Calicivirus: A contagious virus that leads to fever, a runny nose, and painful mouth sores.
  • Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper): A dangerous virus that attacks the gut and immune system, causing vomiting, diarrhea, and severe dehydration.

Risk-based (Conditional) Feline Vaccines Include:

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV): A virus that weakens the immune system, making it easier for cats to get sick and harder for them to recover.
